PFAS
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, better known as PFAS, are chemical compounds that are widely present in numerous products due to their water, grease, and dirt-repellent properties. While these substances can be used for various useful purposes, there has been increasing concern over their harmful effects on human health and the environment over the past decades.
PFAS substances are persistent and are also referred to as “forever chemicals”, meaning that they do not easily break down in the environment and accumulate in organisms. They have been found in drinking water, soil, air, and food chains. PFAS is associated with severe health problems and has negative effects on ecosystems. Various studies have shown a link between exposure to certain PFAS and the risk of certain forms of cancer. Additionally, exposure to PFAS can weaken the immune system or lead to reproductive issues. Animals on land and in water also experience negative consequences from exposure to PFAS.
Milberg’s efforts
Milberg has extensive international experience with PFAS-related disputes. In the Netherlands, Milberg assists a group of fishermen who are experiencing the adverse effects of PFAS contamination in the Western Scheldt river. Milberg maintains close contact with American lawyers who have previously taken action against companies such as 3M and DuPont/Chemours, chemical experts like Chiel Jonker and Jacob de Boer, PFAS damage experts, investigative journalists, and NGOs such as ChemSec. In this way, Milberg is well placed to assist victims of PFAS contamination and enables them to stand up against the polluters. Moreover, Milberg’s efforts also contribute to raising awareness of the PFAS problem.
